The rapid electrification of mobility, industry and heating is putting increasing pressure on Europe’s electricity grids. In particular, low-voltage distribution networks — which deliver power directly to homes and businesses — often lack detailed visibility. This makes it challenging for grid operators to efficiently plan capacity and integrate renewable energy sources.
Orion Grid Technologies, a spin-off of VITO, KU Leuven and EnergyVille, develops innovative AI-driven software for electricity grid management. By combining power systems engineering with artificial intelligence, the company provides accurate insights into low-voltage grids and supports grid operators in capacity analysis and investment decision-making.
The technology is already deployed with grid operators in Belgium, Germany and Austria, managing millions of connection points. In doing so, Orion actively contributes to building smarter, more resilient and future-proof energy systems across Europe.
To accelerate its growth and international expansion, Orion recently secured €1 million in funding. From its base at IncubaThor at Thor Park in Genk, the company continues to develop digital solutions that support the energy transition and strengthen European electricity infrastructure for the future.
